Embu Town has an improved water supply system. However, the water supply improvement has not gone hand in hand with the improvement of generated waste water disposal system in the County. The project was conceived to address the unhygienic situation developing in Embu town and more so in the poor areas of Dallas, Stadium, Blue valley Parts of Majimbo, Kanjuru, Muruatetu and some parts of Central Business District. This called for a scheme to take care of excessive waste water. This scheme is the aptly named Improvement of Embu Sewerage Project Phase I.

The objective of the project was to provide people with proper waste water disposal system and to promote better health through improved hygiene and an improved environment.

Financing for the project was sought by the management of Embu Water and Sanitation Company (EWASCO) to construct waste water disposal system in order to address the unhygienic conditions created by the increased water supply. The funds sought were to construct a sewerage system comprising of sewers and a sewage treatment plant. The project is funded by a loan from Coop Bank organized by Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF) under a World Bank Output Based Aid (OBA) financing.

The cost for the works was estimated at Kshs 451,000,000 for a sewerage system for an ultimate design period of 20 years up to the year 2038 and an immediate treatment plant of a capacity of 2,000 m3 per day.
